Welcome to the official website of the Malawi High Commission in Lusaka, Republic of Zambia. The website is designed to serve as a one stop shop and assist potential investors and entrepreneurs access information on Malawi’s Trade, Investment and Tourism, in addition to providing consular services on line.
The Malawi High Commission was formally established in 1973. It’s mandate is to facilitate Malawi’s economic, political and cultural interests in Zambia as per Malawi Government foreign policy. The Mission is also accredited to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola on non-residential basis and is further responsible for diplomatic relations with countries accredited to Malawi but with residence in Zambia, namely, Cuba, Finland, France, Italy, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, Netherlands, Turkey and the Holy Sea; Commonwealth Youth Centre; and United Nations Agency's, International Labour Organization (ILO) and Economic Commission for Africa – Southern Africa Office (UNECA).
With the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretariat based in Lusaka, the Mission has the additional mandate as Malawi’s Permanent Representative to COMESA. The site will therefore also serve to inform the general public about the happenings in COMESA. |
Malawi Takes Over as COMESA Chair
Malawi will in 2012 until 2013 continue to Chair the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Authority with Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, new President of the Republic of Malawi, at the helm following the demise of former President, Ngwazi Professor Bingu wa Mutharika who passed away on 5th April 2012 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Malawi assumed the Chairmanship of the COMESA Authority at a colourful ceremony during the opening of the 15th Summit of COMESA Heads of State and Government that took place at the New State House grounds in Lilongwe, Malawi from 14th to 15th October 2011. At the Summit, no member State offered to host the summit in 2012. An Extraordinary Summit will therefore need to be held during the year at which a host for the 2013 Summit will be announced.
His Majesty King Mswati III, Ingwenyama of the Kingdom of Swaziland; His Excellency Robert Gabriel Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe; His Excellency Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir, President of the Republic of Sudan; and His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi witnessed the handover of the instruments of power between King Mswati III and President Mutharika.

Malawi produces a wide range of export products with tobacco, tea and sugar as the traditional export products accounting for over 80 percent of Malawi's exports. However, as a result of export diversification, a number of non-traditional products have been developed for export. These non-traditional products fall in the categories of agricultural, manufactured, mining, services and many more. Agriculture being the mainstay of Malawi's economy, the manufacturing sector is largely agro-based and involved in the processing of agricultural products. The prevailing favourable investment climate has witnessed some heavy engineering firms involved in bus assembly, trailers and tankers commence operations for the export market.
